Hayward Council Gets Earful on Rental Housing Issues
The Hayward City Council asked the community to tell them about rental housing and the community spoke!
More than 35 tenants, property owners, property managers and other stakeholders testified at the City Council work session about tenant and rental housing issues on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Bill Espinola, a REALTOR® and Chair of the Bay East Local Government Relations Committee, was among those who shared their experiences as a Hayward resident and rental property owner.
After more than two hours of testimony and lengthy discussion, the City Council ultimately directed staff to research programs to bring tenants and landlords together and ways to create more housing affordable to a variety of incomes. The majority of the Council did not support expanding the existing rent stabilization program.
More community meetings are planned in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Hayward is conducting an on-line survey about housing issues. You can participate by clicking here. The survey is available in Spanish here.
